WhatsApp Web Major Update: Native Calling & Essential Security Insights
WhatsApp Web has grown far beyond a basic messaging mirror into a central hub for daily communication. For business owners, web developers implementing client chat integrations, and everyday users alike, staying current on the latest web-based messaging features and browser security measures is essential. Recent updates bring powerful native functionality alongside critical browser-extension security fixes.
1. Native Browser-Based Calling Has Arrived
Meta has expanded WhatsApp Web by introducing native voice and video calling directly inside web browsers like Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox. Previously, making high-quality calls on desktop required installing the dedicated WhatsApp desktop application. Now, complete calling functionality is accessible through your web browser tab.
- Seamless Call Handoff: Transfer active calls effortlessly between your mobile phone and web browser without disconnecting.
- QuickHD Video Stream: Lowers connection latency so video streams elevate to high definition within seconds of starting a call.
- Background Noise Filtering: Integrated noise suppression cleans up ambient background sounds, ideal for working in remote or busy environments.
- Full Collaboration Tools: Share screens, send real-time call reactions, and manage group calls of up to 32 participants directly on the web.
2. Deep-Dive: The "HermeticReader" Browser Flaw (CVE-2026-48294)
Earlier this summer, security researchers highlighted a zero-click vulnerability labeled HermeticReader. Notably, this flaw did not exist within WhatsApp's code, but was instead located within the Adobe Acrobat PDF extension for Chromium browsers.
The flaw exploited an internal integration engine in the PDF extension. If a user visited a malicious website while having WhatsApp Web active in another tab, the vulnerability allowed automated scripts to access active chat text and contact lists. Adobe quickly issued a patch (version 26.5.2.3) to safeguard users globally.
